WHY DO WE CARE ABOUT HEAT?
The Caribbean region has a large portion of citizens working outdoors (agriculture, fisheries, tourism) who are at risk of heat stress.
Extreme heat is a significant risk to people with non-communicable diseases: diabetes, heart-related illnesses, and respiratory illnesses.
The Caribbean has some of the highest rates of NCDs (in the world!).
The Caribbean region is dealing with increasing temperatures, especially in the summer, which leads to heat illnesses.
Heat unequally affects old people (65+), young people (<18), pregnant women, because they have a harder time regulating the temperature of their body.
Research has shown that heat can cause heat exhaustion, heat stress, heat stroke, and is dangerous for people who have health conditions including hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and ADHD.
